Program

Critical Mass brings together artists, performers, musicians, dancers, writers and thinkers whose works seek to divert established pathways and political narratives. Critical Mass is a festival within a festival - a place for decentring, agitating, questioning and dissolving the boundaries of form.

Chelle Destaffano, 'The Auslan Movement'

  • Brunswick Mechanics Institute 270 Sydney Road Brunswick, VIC, 3056 Australia (map)

An interactive performance/exhibition featuring Auslan (Australian Sign Language). Join Deaf artist Chelle Destefano in a conversation while she creates sculptures of wet watercolour paper from the spatial movements of Auslan in real time.

Observe how watercolour sculptural shapes are formed out of signs and conversations.

New sculptures will be added to the wall after each performance. Alongside these sculptures will sit evocative illustrations of her childhood memories of signing and using the Cued Speech language method she spoke with her Deaf school friends (Auslan was not allowed in schools at that time).
